An inflatable kayak looks simple from the outside. A flexible outer surface, several air chambers, valves, seats, and connection points make up most of the visible structure. The material inside that structure, however, has to deal with a demanding combination of conditions. It must contain air for long periods, tolerate repeated inflation and deflation, bend during folding, resist abrasion during launching and landing, and maintain its mechanical integrity when the kayak is loaded on the water.
